What do you do with your kids’ broken toys? Now you can easily turn them into something brand new, like a park bench or playground equipment! Natural personal care brand Tom’s of Maine and recycling leader TerraCycle have teamed up to create a toy recycling program to create less waste and show kids the value of recycling and lessening our imprint on the environment. This Less Waste Challenge is a great way for families to work together to help keep the planet clean for generations to come. And initiatives like this one are precisely why I’m proud to be a brand ambassador for Tom’s of Maine.
Did you know that more than 250 million tons of waste is generated every year in the United States? This year you can help change that number simply by getting rid of your old broken toys and prevent them from ending up in a landfill.
Of course, if you have toys that your family is done using, don’t throw them away! Donate them instead. Consider giving them to:
- Family and friends
- Day care centers
- Hospital housing (such as a Ronald McDonald or Seashore House)
- Summer camps
- Boys and Girls Clubs
- Senior centers (for when kids come to visit)
How to Join the #LessWaste Challenge:
- Download a free shipping label at http://www.tomsofmaine.com/lesswaste/ to mail in your broken toys to TerraCycle.
- Fill an old box up with up to 10 pounds of broken or unused toys.
- Seal the box, attach the shipping label and send it away!
It is that easy to create less waste.

As a Tom’s of Maine ambassador, I’ve been challenged to complete the #LessWaste Challenge. It really is a challenge in our house, since I’m one of those people who constantly gets rid of unused items – either recycling them, donating them, selling them, or giving them away. We donate books and magazines, clothes, food, sports equipment – even décor and other household items. There’s almost constantly a grouping of items in our garage that have been gathered for donation. Though we didn’t have much remaining (since I had just recently done a massive spring cleanup), I still managed to find a few broken toys in the house. If only I had known about the #LessWaste Challenge sooner, which is why I am thrilled to share it with you.
Today I am challenging YOU to complete the #LessWasteChallenge. If I can find a few broken toys after doing a massive cleanup, I bet you can find some too! Go to http://www.tomsofmaine.com/lesswaste/ to get started!
