From 2001-2003, I went through a series of mishaps with infertility. Well, that puts in fairly mildly. The Internet wasn’t the wealth of over-sharing and misinformation that it is today, but there was still enough data out there to gain knowledge on my own to ask questions about my personal medical needs. Each week I went into my office with a list of new questions. My doctor would chuckle and roll his eyes before letting me rattle off my list. And each week when I left the office, knowing full well that I wouldn’t listen, he suggested that I stay away from Dr. Google.
Fortunately, he took my questions seriously because I’m not much of an alarmist. Yet I am a research-oriented person who feels more in-control of uncontrollable situations when I am armed with a little bit of knowledge. Though it certainly is a patient’s right to ask questions, he was amazing in his understanding of my needs, and I am forever grateful for his patience.
Everyone is entitled to have access to medical information, alarmist or not. Luckily, none of us need to lean on Dr. Google for information, or misinformation, any longer. Now we can all download the FREE Merck Manual Consumer App.
The Merck Manuals App: Goodbye Dr. Google!
The Merck Manuals have been a trusted source of medical information for over 100 years, and now the Merck Manual Consumer App provides 24/7 access to reliable medical info at no cost. The app provides clear, practical explanations for thousands of medical disorders, giving consumers access to credible, easy to understand health information that’s been written, vetted and updated by more than 350 medical professionals.
There are no ads and they do not ask you to register or do use the app to collect any personal information. This was a HUGE bonus for me, because it makes the user experience so much better.
The app also allows you to search for information based on symptoms or about emergencies. Last week my son had his tonsils and adenoids removed. Before the procedure I looked online a bit to find out about recovery, and found everything from 4 days to 17 days. That’s quite a range! While we received general information from our doctor about what to expect post-surgery, I was grateful to have the app when a question about his care arose in the middle of the night that I could answer without having to call the doctor.
And just to give the app a test of my own, I looked up a rare disease that my son had for many years. Sure enough, the Merck Manual Consumer App had comprehensive information about it!
If you want peace of mind through access to medical information but do not want to rely on Dr. Google, try the Merck Manual Consumer App. For Apple devices, get the app in the iTunes app store. For Android devices, go to Google Play. Download it once, and keep it on your device for simple medical questions to emergency situations.
In 2015, The Merck Manual and MSD Manual kicked off Global Medical Knowledge 2020, a program to make the best current medical information accessible by up to three billion professionals and patients around the world by 2020. For access to thousands of medical topics with images, videos and a constantly expanding set of resources, visit MerckManuals.com.
