Most of us can say with certainty that 2016 has been a tumultuous year. There is so much mudslinging, so much animosity, and so much anger. The intense ugliness of this election in and of itself is enough; let alone the shooting in Orlando, Brock Turner, Black Lives Matter, Christina Grimme, Leaks, Hacks, Whistleblower attacks, the Dakota Pipeline, and many more stories I’m blanking on at the moment. The negativity and rhetoric has become overwhelming, and who knows what else is coming down the pike.
What I do know is that I feel compelled to write about the potential to not let hate win. Hatred cures nothing. It never has, and it never will. Yet hatred seems to be growing so much stronger, so much more prevalent. And acting on bitterness seems easier than ever to accomplish.
Though what does it really accomplish, anyway, besides inciting more anger and hatred?
We cannot become immune to senseless tragedies and acts of hatred simply because we are getting used to hearing about them. And we can stand up effectively for what we believe in, and do so in a civilized manner. We can be better than this. We can be so much better than this.
There are hundreds, if not thousands of ways to not let hate win. Here are just a few of them:
