One Friday several years ago, my son came home from camp with a bit of discomfort in his year. By the next day he was fairly miserable. Of course, these things only seem to happen on days when the doctor’s office is closed. Whether it was an ear infection or swimmer’s ear, it didn’t seem quite enough to take him to Urgent Care, so went to the newly opened CVS MinuteClinic® right near my home. And I haven’t been to the pediatrician for a minor illness since that day.
Today, they know us well at the MinuteClinic®. I’m talking really, really well. Despite my best efforts to keep my kids healthy, school and camp brings lots of germs, and it’s not always easy to keep active kids from catching them. Going to the CVS MinuteClinic® is so much more convenient for me than venturing to the pediatrician. And they just made it even better.
When Back-to-School Means Back to the MinuteClinic®
Did you know that you can view wait times at your local MinuteClinic® and hold your place in line, right from your computer or smartphone? No more sitting at the store for hours when you don’t feel well, or when your child is suffering. No more leaving work or a fun-filled day to wait in a chair for a routine well visit.
Their new digital tool program allows patients to pre-register for same-day services, such as a sore throat, sinus infections and earaches. It also allows for same-day well visits for yourself, or when your kids need those dreaded forms signed for back-to-school or enrolling in sports.
Now you can wait for your appointment here.
Or maybe even here.
Start by going to: http://www.cvs.com/minuteclinic/resources/hold-my-place. Then continue using the following steps:
Step 1: Use the clinic locator to select the clinic that you would like to visit. View approximate wait times for this clinic and nearby clinics to help you choose the best option.
Step 2: If the Hold My Place In Line button is available, click on the button to begin your online pre-registration.
Step 3: Follow the prompts to complete the pre-registration process. You will then receive a confirmation email or text message with your unique pre-registration code.
Step 4: Visit the clinic shortly before your time to be seen and sign into the kiosk using the unique pre-registration code that was provided in your pre-registration email or text message.
Step 5: Once you’ve signed in at the kiosk your registration is complete and you’re ready to be seen when the practitioner is available.
Your place in line will be held based on the order in which your pre-registration was received. If you pre-register and there is no one at the clinic, you will be #1 in line! The only time you may have to wait for a bit is if someone is already in the office when you arrive.
You should note that there are still a few of the most exceedingly busy clinics that cannot yet participate in the pre-registration process. (You can go to http://www.cvs.com/minuteclinic/clinic-locator) to find your closest participating CVS MinuteClinic®. The pre-registration functionality may also be turned off temporarily for various reasons. For instance, you won’t be able to hold a in line during the first hour of clinic operation or the last 1.5 hours, as those are high-volume times for walk-in patients. Services that do not require immediate action are not currently available for pre-registration, but you can still walk in to receive care for them.
Last week I received a complimentary comprehensive health screening exam from the CVS MinuteClinic® near my home. The nurse practitioner on staff was fantastic (and answered all of my ten zillion questions with ease). The health screening exams for adults include a full heath assessment including a cholesterol and glucose screening, as well as a weight and blood pressure check. By the way, it’s best to go on an empty stomach for the most accurate screening results.
Waiting and waiting (and waiting) for an appointment is no fun. It is especially difficult when you are not feeling well, or caring for a sick child. With the convenience of the MinuteClinic®, as well as being able to pre-register and hold a place in line, we can all get health care services without having to sit in a “no fun” doctor’s office waiting area too.
Oh, and if you are headed there for those back-to-school or sports forms, be sure to remember to bring them with you. You may have been able to wait for your appointment while at the beach, but you still won’t want to drive back to get those forms!
