When I was studying to become a health coach, there were two important lessons mentioned over and over again:
1. Eat a healthy breakfast.
2. Consume plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids.
By now most people know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. On the other hand, the benefits of importance of Omega-3 fatty acids may not be quite so well known.
No matter what age or stage of life you are at, you’ll benefit from a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3’s are known as healthy fats, because they can help the body to fight against the harm that bad fats do. Omega-3 fatty acids benefit the brain, eyes, heart, and the circulatory system. They can help lower cholesterol levels and reduce blood pressure. They can even help ward off depression by boosting the dopamine receptors that suppress stress hormones.
If these Omega-3 fatty acids are so wonderful, how come we aren’t consuming more of them? Well, Omega-3 fatty acids are most prevalent in cold-water fish, such as salmon, sardines, and tuna. Omega-3’s can also be found in lesser amounts in flax, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, canola oil, soybeans, wheat germ, and eggs. And let’s face it, not all Americans, especially kids, are eating cold-water fish or flax seeds on a regular basis.
It probably won’t come as a surprise that most Americans are deficient in Omega-3’s. That’s why I’ve been taking Barlean’s Omega-3 fish oil and flax oil swirls. Just two spoonfuls a day provides 720 mg per serving. It has no artificial flavors or colors and no sugar. It’s gluten free, non-GMO, and my kids will take it without complaint! They make a variety of flavors to choose from, though my current favorites are the key lime fish oil and the pomegranate blueberry flax oil.
I also just discovered Barlean’s Flax Chia Coconut Organic Blend. High in Omega-3’s and dietary fiber; containing antioxidants and plant-based protein, this organic mix combines ground flaxseed, chia seed and unsweetened shredded coconut. Last week I made a breakfast which adds this nutritional powerhouse with the calcium and protein in Stonyfield yogurt with potassium and vitamin C in bananas, mango and peaches.
Remember earlier when I said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? This particular breakfast is off the nutritional charts, folks. It tastes delicious and took less than two minutes to get onto the table.
Tropical Breakfast Parfait Recipe
1/2 cup Mango
1/2 cup Peaches
6 ounces Stonyfield Yogurt Plain (I used the Greek yogurt)
3 tbsp Barlean’s Flax Chia Coconut Organic Blend
1/3 tsp Vanilla
1/3 tsp Cinnamon (optional)
Blend ingredients well and enjoy!
By the way, for more information about sources of DHA and Omega-3, check out The Omega-3 Effect. Barlean’s products can be purchased at most supermarkets, health food stores, and at online retailers such as LuckyVitamin.com.
Disclosure: Thank you to the folks at Barlean’s for sharing their products with me. I was already an avid Omega Swirl fan and am now a devotee of the Flax Chia Coconut Organic Blend. I am also proud to be an ambassador for Stonyfield Organic. Please note that there are affiliate links in this post.
