One of the best changes my family has made is using essential oils for sleep support. Sometimes it is hard to settle down at the end of the day, and essential oils can be a proactive way to calm the mind and body, getting it ready for a good night’s sleep.
A peaceful night’s rest does not come easy in my household, so using essential oils for sleep support has become routine for us. My kids are restless sleepers. I am a Stress Insomniac who goes in cycles with sleep patterns based on my stress level. And then there is my husband, who is so loud and restless that it is nearly impossible for anyone else within a 50-foot radius to get any shut eye whatsoever. Sometimes I think he can get more exercise while sleeping than during the work day!
Essential oils have also been used for thousands of years for their spiritual and emotional properties. Their powerful scents activate the limbic system, known as the brain’s center of emotion, memory, instinct, and mood. Essential oils are commonly used for sleep support and relaxation, these are some of our favorites for diffusing:
Cedarwood essential oil can help create a calming and comforting atmosphere. It has a strong odor, but Cedarwood happens to be my favorite oil for promoting a good night’s rest.
German Chamomile has a calming aroma that helps create feelings of peace and patience.
Lavender is used for soothing and balancing the temperament. Lavender is said to promote a sense of calm.
Valerian root has been used for thousands of years for its calming, grounding, and emotionally balancing influences. It has active constituents that exert a calming and restorative effect on the nervous system.
Vetiver essential oil can be diffused for its calming and relaxing fragrance.
We also use these essential oil blends for sleep support:
Peace & Calming is used for tension reduction and relaxation support. It’s not too difficult to figure out that Peace & Calming is meant to promote a sense of peace and calm.
RutaVaLa is also used for help with releasing tension and overcoming negative feelings.
SleepyIze essential oil blend was specifically designed for kids to use at bedtime for a peaceful aromatic environment as part of a KidsScents collection. This one is my son’s favorite!
Sleep Essence is an essential oil supplement that contains four oils which have unique sleep-enhancing properties in a vegetarian capsule. Combining Lavender, Vetiver, Valerian, and Ruta graveolens essential oils with the hormone melatonin, a well-known sleep aid. This is an excellent solution for people who want the benefits of essential oils without diffusing them.
Tranquil is a blend of lavender, cedarwood and roman chamomile essential oils formulated to calm and relax the body and mind.
There are also some essential oils for sleep support that we haven’t tried yet, including:
Angelica, which has soothing aromatic qualities that help create a relaxing environment.
Idaho Balsam Fir has a woodsy scent that people enjoy for grounding and its calming aroma.
Mastrante has an earthy aroma used to promote relaxation and a sense of calm.
Roman Chamomile‘s gentleness makes it especially valuable for restless children, with a sweet scent that can help to calm the mind and body.
