For World Kindness Day, I posted a list of 85 easy acts of kindness ideas. That was the very same day that Paris was attacked, and despite the best of intentions, the world grew a little bit darker. Yet the way to fight terror is with solidarity, and (at least in my opinion) we will only find solidarity if we start being more accepting and kinder to one another.
This coming weekend, along with generationOn and the help of some wonderful friends, my family will be taking that to heart. Tomorrow is Family Volunteer Day, a day that celebrates the power of families who work together to support their neighbors and neighborhoods. Family Volunteer Day is held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving to “kick-off” the holiday season with giving and service.
Speaking of kicking, Family Volunteer Day happens to be on a big soccer tournament day for my household. So we have decided to combine the two, and will be collecting non-perishable food items from our teams to donate to our local food pantry. This year more than ever before, the pantry has called on the community to help fill their quickly depleting supplies.
With the holidays quickly approaching, there may be more need than ever before. So we sent an email to the members of our teams, asking them to bring donations to the field this weekend. A few who will not be in attendance have already generously dropped off items for us to donate! As my kids see our cars and garage fill with food and household items to donate, they are truly grasping the idea of paying it forward.
Family Volunteer Day is the brainchild of generationOn and Disney Friends for Change, who are rallying families across the country to participate in the 25th annual Family Volunteer Day. generationOn is a youth organization whose mission is to encourage kids to make their mark on the world through engage in acts of kindness through service. It is the youth and family division of Points of Light, the largest organization in the world dedicated to volunteer service.
Their goal is to provide the resources and opportunities needed to inspire, equip, and mobilize kids to pay it forward.
You can take part in the day too! Learn more and get ideas at http://www.generationon.org. You can also search through my list of acts of kindness for ways to pay it forward on Family Volunteer Day. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like!
In addition, if you register on http://generationon.org/fvd and upload a story with a photo of your Family Volunteer Day service to the photo wall, you will be eligible to win one of three grand prizes of $1,000 VISA gift cards and one of 10 “family night out” prize packages for dinner and a movie valued at $160 each. Another great reason to participate!
Happy Family Volunteer Day!
