It’s time to ditch the toxic chemicals once and for all. DIY dryer sheets with essential oils are a super easy way to make your home healthier.
People are using essential oils for just about everything, and freshening up your clothes are no exception. Recently I recently began making my own natural dryer sheets using essential oils after hearing more and more about the potential dangers of conventional laundry products. More than 25 volatile pollutants, including carcinogens, have been found in conventional laundry products. The Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics calls the chemicals in fabric softeners “asthmagens,” substances that can cause asthma to develop in otherwise healthy people. Another recent study on air contaminants from consumer goods detected between 18 and 20 chemicals in conventional laundry products, including potential human carcinogens, developmental toxicants and allergens.
DIY dryer sheets are easy to make, reusable, and better for you, because they do not include any of the chemicals found in store-bought dryer sheets. And you can make any scent or combination that you prefer, unlike those that you find at the store.
How to make DIY dryer sheets with essential oils:
Ingredients: To make these dryer sheets with essential oils, you will first need pieces of fabric. You can purchase cotton fabric or use old scraps of fabric you may already have in your home. You can even use some old dish rags or items of clothing that are too small for your growing children. You will also need white vinegar, a jar for storing your sheets, and whatever essential oils that you would like to use. You may like Lavender, Purification, Lemon, Thieves, or another favorite essential oil. (My favorite scent is a combination of Lemon and Thieves.)
Now that you have the ingredients, here’s how to make essential oil dryer sheets:
Step 1: Cut your fabric into strips. Make them as large or as small as you would like, as long as they fit into your jar. Mine are about 3-4 inches wide by about 8-10 inches long.
Step 2: Pour about 1/2 cup of vinegar into the jar and add 6-10 drops of your favorite essential oil(s) depending on how strong you would like the scent.
Step 3: Mix together your oils and vinegar by simply swirling the jar around so that they mix entirely.
Step 4: Add your fabric strips to the oil mixture and make sure they are fully saturated. You can put the lid on the jar and tip it upside down to make sure they all get fully absorbed.
Step 5: When you are ready to use them, ring out any extra liquid in the dryer sheets and place them in the dryer with your clothing.
You see, I told you it was easy to make these DIY dryer sheets! Not only will you save money, your clothing will feel softer and smell better than ever. If you want to ditch the chemicals and want your clothes to smell amazing, give these a try!
