Okay, ladies. Listen up. It’s time to talk about thyroid health. Perhaps it’s not the sexiest topic, but it is an important one. Your thyroid plays a crucial role in maintaining a properly functioning body. The thyroid is involved with insulin levels, circulation, reproduction, metabolism, and energy levels. Even depression can be a result of an underactive thyroid.
Women between the ages of 30 and 50 are most prone to developing thyroid conditions, so it’s time for us all to take notice of what is going on in that space just below our Adam’s Apple.
Maintaining natural thyroid health is important, but how exactly does one do that?
First of all, if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, consider asking your doctor to check in on your thyroid. Thyroid health can affect a woman’s reproductive system, potentially influencing fertility. (As someone who suffered from both fertility issues and recurrent early pregnancy loss, I sure wish I had this bit of information when I was trying to get pregnant!) Studies show that what’s going on with your thyroid can affect the health of the baby too.
Having had breast cancer can play a role in thyroid changes as well. If you are a breast cancer survivor, consider asking your doctor to check your thyroid at your next appointment.
An estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, and up to 60% of those with thyroid disease are unaware of their condition. Fortunately there are many ways you can maintain natural thyroid support, though you should be sure to speak with a doctor or healthcare practitioner before making any changes to your routine.
10 Tips for Natural Thyroid Support
That one should really be a no-brainer by now. Even at relatively low levels, smoking can alter and diminish proper thyroid function.
Ditch all the plastics and chemicals.
There is a known link between thyroid hormone level disruption and both BPA and phthalates. Researchers have also linked prenatal exposure to BPA with thyroid hormone disruption not just in pregnant women, but also to newborn boys. (Scary, isn’t that?)
BPA (Bisphenol A) is a compound commonly found in the lining of tin cans, hard plastics and even some store receipts. Phthalates are used to increase the flexibility of plastic and vinyl. Phthalates are used in hundreds of consumer products from cosmetics and personal care products to toys, furnishings, insecticides, flooring and plastic wrap.
Watch your water intake.
So while you may want to switch to a glass for drinking water to avoid chemicals in plastic bottles, you may still want to keep an eye on that water you are drinking. Water fluoridation above a certain level is linked to a significantly higher than average rate of underactive thyroid.
Avoid artificial sweeteners.
Consider going gluten free.
There is a surprisingly strong connection between Celiac disease and thyroid conditions, so a gluten free diet may be helpful for maintaining optimal thyroid health naturally.
Snack on brazil nuts.
Yup. Brazil nuts are a rich natural source of selenium, which is an antioxidant that plays a role in the production of thyroid hormone. Consume them in moderation though!
Limit your soy intake.
There are varying reports as to the extent that soy intake may (or may not) be harmful to thyroid health, but my view is to that if it may be helpful, then go ahead and do it. One article from the American Nutrition Association highlights the downside of soybean consumption, including it’s potential negative affects on the thyroid.
Watch your weight.
