Knowing what we do about skin cancer, it is so incredibly important to stay protected. We spend a lot of time outdoors, from the playing fields to playing in the backyard. During the summer time, my kids reapply their sunscreen at camp, and it is important to me to know that they are well protected from the sun, without chemicals or toxins. For years I have been on the hunt for an effective, natural sunscreen that my entire family can use. We are fortunate to not have had experience with skin cancer yet, and I am doing my best to keep it that way if at all possible.
Sunscreen may protect you from skin cancer, but at what other risk? Generally, most chemical sunscreens are known to permeate the skin to some degree. Yet ingredients in common chemical sunscreens, such as: avobenxone, oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, 4-methylbenzidyl camphor, and isobutene, may actually be doing more harm than good. According to the Environmental Working Group, these chemicals, which are absorbed by the skin, have been shown to cause mimic hormones, disrupting the hormone disruption. Research suggests that sunscreen chemicals can be toxic to reproductive systems and interfere with normal fetal development. Even if you are not in the baby-making mindset, no matter what stage you are in life from childhood through menopause and onward, it can be incredibly detrimental to disrupt normal hormone function in the body. These harmful may also break down over time into free radicals, which may actually cause skin cancers. How’s that for counterproductive?
In addition to the toxic ingredients mentioned above, some brands also hide phthalates and parabens in their ingredient labels as “fragrance.” And consumers are purchasing these products then putting them their skin, and on their children? Yikes.
The good news is Goddess Garden takes these concerns seriously. Their products contain natural, organic ingredients that are every bit as effective as those found in conventional sunscreens. You will never find any hormone-disrupting chemicals in their sunscreens. What you will find is ingredients like the minerals zinc and titanium, lavender, radish, soy, and sunflower oils! (The Baby and Facial sunscreens only use zinc oxide.) They use radish root as a preservative, along with glyceryl caprylate, and glyceryl undecylenate, both of which are derived from coconut oil.
With conventional sunscreens, you need to wait 15 to 20 minutes before it protects you from the sun. With natural sunscreen, you can go out into the sun immediately without having to worry about sunburn because the minerals actually sit on top of your skin rather than absorb into it. The minerals act like a mirror and reflect sunlight away from your body. No matter what SPF you are using, you should always reapply your sunscreen every two hours.
What’s the difference between natural sunscreen and organic sunscreen? Because more than 70% of the ingredients are organically grown, every Goddess Garden product is certified organic. However, the naturally occurring minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that block the sun are not grown, so sunscreens (whether made by Goddess Garden or not) will never be labeled by the USDA as organic.
