Did you know that every year, nearly half a million babies are born prematurely in the United States? That is equal to one baby born prematurely every single minute.
One in nine babies is born prematurely in the United States each year. Both of my children were among them.
Unlike most pregnant women, I was in a position where I knew beforehand that my babies would be born prematurely. The days and weeks leading up to their births were terrifying, not knowing just how early they would be born or if they would suffer long term consequences from coming into the world before their little bodies were ready.
For more than 75 years, the March of Dimes has been a leading nonprofit organization for healthy pregnancies and babies, working to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. They believe that every baby is born to do something great. Throughout its history, the March of Dimes campaigns have supported programs related to polio, birth defects, folic acid, newborn screening and premature birth. Today, the March of Dimes is inspired by all babies – those born healthy and those who need help to survive and thrive.
Because of the incredibly large numbers of premature births, it is a cause that resonates with families and companies nationwide and around the world. Their current “imbornto” campaign (www.imbornto.com) taps into the collective hopes, dreams and aspirations that we all have for our children. The ultimate goal is to help fund $25,000,000 in research to find the causes and preventions for premature birth, birth defects and other serious threats to our babies’ health.
The March of Dimes has several partner companies who donate proceeds to the foundation. For example, if you know someone who loves ALEX AND ANI, 20% of the purchase price* from each Special Delivery Charm Bangle sold, with a minimum donation of $25,000, between March 2015 and December 2015, will be donated to the March of Dimes. You can support the March of Dimes and the imbornto campaign by making a donation here or by making a purchase through their partner companies just in time for Mother’s Day!
As a parent of two premature babies, I am proud to be among an exclusive team of 39 “MoDSquad” mom bloggers, each of us representing the length of a healthy full-term pregnancy (39 weeks). During our Twitter chat with @TheMotherhood on April 15 at 1:00 p.m. ET, we will discuss the March of Dimes’ (@MarchofDimes) work, the #imbornto campaign, and how together we can ensure every baby is born to do something great. There is, of course, a fantastic team of dad bloggers joining us too! We will be giving away two gift baskets featuring prizes from March of Dimes’ partners Alex & Ani, Mud Pie and Kmart, and three Visa gift cards during the chat. (Prizes limited to U.S. participants only.) You can RSVP at: http://vite.io/TheMotherhoodChats. I hope you will join us to learn how you can get involved and support the hopes and aspirations for babies everywhere!
If you saw my two premature babies today you would never know the difference between them and kids who were born at full term. Yet I know all too well that they are among the lucky ones. As for me, #imbornto be a lot of things. Most important among them is to be their parent.
What are you born to be?
