I have a confession to make. Whenever I go to Starbucks, especially to hang out there for a while and get some work done, I purchase a package of Evolution Harvest snacks. The spicy pepita flavor is hard for me to resist, though the cocoa flavor comes in handy too when the mood strikes.
At home though, we are those people who make green smoothies all the time. Well, they aren’t always green in color. Pinks, purples and yellows are popular around here too. We blend our breakfast, trying various combinations depending on whichever organic fruits and veggies we have around.
This summer I have been spending long hours in the car, doing once or twice weekly road trips from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts and back again. Green smoothies for breakfast are not an option when you are on the road long before the sun comes up. Not wanting to overload on caffeine either, I started purchasing the Evolution Fresh drinks at Starbucks and drink them regularly now. So when the opportunity to write about them came up, it was a no-brainer for me.
Evolution Fresh drinks are cold-pressed fruits and vegetables, using high pressure processing to keep in all the flavor and nutrients from the produce. There are no added colors, flavors, or sugars. That’s my kind of drink.
They even have their own ingredient-sourcing specialists, who have over 51 years of combined experience working with produce experts and growers around the world. Who knew there was even such a thing as an ingredient-sourcing specialist?
Evolution Fresh offers a variety of juice flavors like Essential Greens, Organic Spicy Lemonade, Defense Up, and Sweet Burn. My favorite flavors are Pineapple Coconut Water, Organic Ginger Limeade, and Sweet Greens with Lemon. Coconut water has so many health benefits, but I am not a fan of its sour flavor. Their Pineapple Coconut Water is much smoother tasting, and it reminds me of the beach. Last week I took the half I had left from my trip and combined it with a frozen banana in the blender. All that was missing was a tiny little paper umbrella. Well, a shot of rum might not have been so bad either. Actually, the Evolution Fresh website has suggestions for healthier summer cocktails, with recipes for a Spicy Bourbon Sour, Ginger Lime Margarita, and Strawberry Lemonade Daiquiri. (You’re welcome.)
Apparently I am not the only one who enjoys the Sweet Greens with Lemon too, because it was included in Prevention Magazine’s annual “100 Cleanest Packaged Food Awards” and SHAPE Magazine recognized Sweet Greens with Lemon as one of the best tasting Green Juices of 2013. And speaking of clean, their juices are Non-GMO Project verified, with the exception of Protein Power Smoothie, which they are working to convert as we speak.
