I am a strong believer that where we put our consumer dollars makes a statement. Where we choose to spend our money, no matter how much it may be, says something about us as a society and as individuals. (By the same token, where we decide to not spend money can make a strong statement as well.) That is why I often choose to highlight companies who are involved in social good, who give back to the community or who pay it forward to the future in some way. Perhaps it is through by making a commitment to sustainability, or supporting local organic agriculture, or eliminating harmful chemicals in their products, or knowing which “big box” stores make an effort to reduce their environmental impact.
fashionABLE is a company that is based on the foundation of social good, by hoping to make a new kind of fashion statement with responsible consumers. When you buy a product from fashionABLE, you are directly helping to provide opportunities for women in Africa.
They work with women to help them start small business cooperatives, partnering with manufacturers who also employ women and give them fair wages. The fashionABLE mission is to create sustainable business in Africa so that these women are not lost in the shuffle, forced into prostitution, or dependent on charity. Instead, through your purchase, they can become a vital part of a developing economy. fashionABLE is also training more women in order to employ as many as demand will allow.
The bracelets, scarves and leather goods are made by these women and named after them. This week I was gifted a Teshome bracelet from the brand to try for myself. Handcrafted in Ethiopia, this funky wrap bracelet is made from Ethiopian leather and is adorned with a unique figure-eight clasp. It is fun, light, and adds a bit of spunk to any outfit. Don’t you think?
Having small wrists, I tend to not wear a lot of bracelets during the day because I find them cumbersome while typing. Yet I put on the Teshome bracelet and wore it from morning until night, without a hint of an annoyance. In fact, I forgot that I was wearing it until I received two separate compliments! Well, guess who ordered two more Teshome bracelets this morning?
