Having spent the best summers of my childhood at sleepaway camp, this amazing new initiative is one to applaud. Pun intended. Tony Award winner Idina Menzel and her TV star husband Taye Diggs are giving back by founding a performing arts sleepaway camp called Camp BroaderWay as part of the BroaderWay Foundation.
A BroaderWay Foundation was created to give youth from under-served communities an outlet for self-expression and creativity. Starting this summer, Camp BroaderWay will inspire youngsters to pursue their dreams through performing arts-centered learning programs and performances. The sleepaway camp will welcome approximately 35 girls in 6th grade to a 10-day performing arts camp this summer.
Here’s the really great part. They will be taught by Idina Menzel herself, a team of professional Broadway artists and some special guests, including Taye Diggs. The camp’s Creative Director, Jeanine Tesori, has a long and hugely successful history writing scores for musical theater and movies. With Jeanine’s professional assistance and Idina’s involvement, the campers at Camp BroaderWay will come up with a theme, write the lyrics as well as the script and produce their very own show. After their 10-day stay at camp, the girls will return to New York City to perform their original production for family, friends and supporters. Doesn’t that sound like a dream come true?
In addition to learning the performing arts, the girls will have the chance to make new friends, play sports and explore nature. As a former camper, I just know that Camp BroaderWay will give these girls memories to last a lifetime.
Want to get involved in Camp Broaderway? There are a variety of ways you can help, from sponsoring a girl’s camp experience to donating goods for the campers to helping them pay for equipment and supplies. For more information, visit the BroaderWay Foundation website at http://www.abroaderway.org/.
