One of the many reasons why I have developed a passion for healthy eating, natural wellness, and epigenetics is that the more I learn, the more amazed I am at the body’s built-in defense systems and its potential to heal itself.
As you may have read on this site, my family experienced this firsthand when a natural approach was able to cure my son after years of doctors, procedures and hospital visits. Though I am absolutely not anti-traditional medicine and I do believe that it is important, I have also come to realize that if we keep our bodies clean and running efficiently, we will not need to rely on medicine as often as we do. I am now fascinated by modalities of modern medicine such as naturopathy, which strives to cure illnesses holistically by finding the cause of disease and understanding an individual’s bodily responses. It is my hope that western and eastern medicine can meet to form a more integrative approach to healing in the future. In the meantime I will continue to learn on my own and share all that I can to help our bodies stay clean and run efficiently.
I heard somewhere recently that pretty much every person has at least some cancer cells in their bodies by around the age of 40. It is my hope that those cells will lie dormant rather than developing into something more serious. I may have learned as much as I know now about health and wellness too late for that to happen, but that won’t stop me from trying!
For those of us who do develop a more serious illness, wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could utilize our bodies’ own potential to heal themselves? What if we could avoid surgeries to remove body parts, and not have to go through radiation or chemotherapy by simply allowing our bodies to do what it can naturally? Well, it may actually be possible in our lifetimes. And to me, that is just the coolest thing ever.
Last week it was announced that an antibody has been developed using the bodies’ own immune system that can selectively attack and destroy cancer cells. A research team from Duke Health was trying to figure out why some lung cancer patients have early-stage tumors that never progress to advanced disease. It turned out that most of the tumors that did not become advanced stage disease had a presence of antibodies that protected cells.
Once this antibody was identified, the researchers looked at how this approach could be optimized as a cancer therapy. So they cloned the antibody genes and tested them in multiple types of cancer cells. They looked at lung, gastric and breast cancers in lab dishes, and in tumors in living mice.
Guess what happened? These antibodies that we already have inside of us caused tumor cell death without any obvious side effects. Just like an army, the antibody dismantles a specific part of a cancer cell’s defense system and then rallies the troops to employ other mechanisms of attack. And it does all this while leaving the healthy cells in tact, so there are no innocent victims.
Further research is needed, of course, but this could lead to a whole new approach to treating disease. In the meantime, I’ll continue to try to build my battlefield by eating healthy, utilizing a natural approach to wellness, and continuing to learn and share information about the body’s built-in defense systems.
Because the more I learn, the more amazed I am at the body and its own potential to heal.
