The breast cancer 3 day event is around the corner, so it’s time to start preparing. Admittedly, I am starting to get a little nervous. Yet I know that with each step I take I will be thinking of my friends Amanda, Susie, and others who have come face-to-face with this awful disease. With that said, here is what I am doing now to get ready for the breast cancer 3 day.
Step up the fundraising. Now that summer is in full swing and the kids are off to camp, this is the time to kick the fundraising into high gear. Speaking of fundraising, if you would like to support me on this adventure as we raise money for breast cancer research, here is a link to my fundraising page. Any amount is greatly appreciated.
Start walking. At first it seemed so silly to me to practice walking. After all, I am fairly fit, exercise often, and have been walking for four decades. Why would I need to practice? Then I did a seven mile walk and felt it the next morning. That was just about one third of what we will be doing in one day – and we’ll be doing it three days in a row. I guess that means I had better get walking.
They say that the more walking your body is used to doing by the start of the event, the less taxing it will be on your body. Oh, it will be taxing regardless, but it will be made marginally less so if your body has some muscle memory to work from. I am struggling to find the time to get all this walking in because it sure is time-consuming. Next week I am planning to do at least one ten mile walk and a few shorter walks. The following week I’ll go for one walk of at least twelve miles with a few shorter walks.
Watch my weight. Right now I am a few pounds heavier than usual, maybe three or four. Normally this would not bother me much since I tend to lose and gain those few pounds often. However, as long as I am fueling my body with healthy foods, by carrying less weight the walk may be a teensy tiny bit easier. I expect this to be a pretty grueling three days, so any teensy bits of help are welcome.
Think about the schedule for the week of the walk. What will need to get done, and how many days in advance? For example, I plan to see the chiropractor twice that week for adjustments prior to the three full days of walking. Also, think about when there will be time to pack.
Plan outfits and carry items. An acquaintance who did last year’s walk told me not to wear anything new that weekend. Nothing. Do not even wear new socks, she said. I also want to plan what I will be carrying with me that day. As it gets closer, I plan to do a few practice walks in those outfits with those carry items to make sure that everything is comfortable.
Speaking of packing, it’s time to think about what else will be important to bring to the walk, and what might need to be purchased or ordered and broken in beforehand. For example, I just purchased a battery extension for my phone so that I do not have to worry about losing charge during the daytime. I’ll also need to have enough sunscreen, essential oils and a first aid kit.
Can you think of anything else that can be done to prepare for the breast cancer 3 day? If so, please let me know!
