Social Responsibility and Fun: The Flyers’ Wives Carnival

For almost 20 years I have heard about the Flyers’ Wives Carnival. It is an annual event here in Philadelphia run by the wives (and significant others) of the city’s beloved Philadelphia Flyers NHL hockey team. My friends have memories of going as a kid and love being able to make the same memories with their own kids so many years later.

Flyers fans are a die-hard bunch, standing by their team through thick and thin. This annual carnival, a day when both the players and the fans get a chance to give back, only strengthens that bond between the city and its team.

Ever since its inception in 1977, the Flyers’ Wives Carnival has become one of the oldest and most successful one-day charity events hosted by a professional sports franchise. Fans have the opportunity to meet Flyers players and even play games against players. There is a Shot on Goal, a Dunk Tank and other family fun activities such as an opportunity to tour the Wells Fargo Center press box.

Members of Flyers Alumni will also be at the carnival in the Mezzanine Level throughout the day, and you can visit them at the autograph booth. This year, the 1973-74 and 1974-75 Flyers teams will be in attendance in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of winning the Stanley Cup.

Proceeds from the day benefit several area non-profit organizations which focus on healthcare initiatives to youth recreation programs and more. The funds raised during the annual Flyers’ Wives Carnival and other Comcast-Spectacor Charities fundraising events, which together have donated more than $25 million to charity to date.

The 37th Annual Flyers’ Wives Carnival on Sunday takes place on January 26th, from 1:30-6:00 pm at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. 4. I am a huge huge huge Flyers fan! The Flyers wives are probably the only sports wives I think highly of. The tremendous amount of work they put in for the Carnival is staggering. But more than the show they put on, it is the obvious smiles of the kids that are in attendance, and those that they help with their fundraising. And the players have as much fun as the kids do!
