Giveaway! The Energy-Saving Nest Thermostat

The Nest Learning Thermostat Saes EnergyFor the past five weeks I have been participated in a fun challenge with several other bloggers to see who can save the most electricity this winter. And each of us got a Nest Thermostat for our homes.

The truth is that in many households, people leave the house at one temperature either seasonally or year round. When we first moved into this house several years ago, we did the same thing. The Nest Learning Thermostat figures out your family’s schedule, and programs itself to accommodate you. It can also be controlled and monitored from your phone.

As someone who tends to always be cold, I have a tendency to make my home a comfortable temperature rather than saving money by leaving it a little cool in the house. This thermostat tells you when you are set to a temperature that saves energy. It shows a green leaf on the thermostat.

The makers of the Nest Learning Thermostat say that it can lower your heating and cooling bills by up to 20%. We have only had ours for one billing cycle so far. Considering that it was during the holiday week and the polar vortex, we were really pleased with the results. We have also been making a concerted effort to conserve energy, particularly in the kitchen.

I am looking forward to seeing its impact in our home during the summer months. The thermostat has a function called Airwave, where it automatically shuts off the cool air a few minutes before it shuts off the fan. So it saves on the production of the cold air, while allowing for the air to continue circulating.

The Nest Learning Thermostat also has a neat function called Auto-Away, that automatically turns to an energy-efficient temperature when you are not home. It retails for $249 at https://store.nest.com/ and is really easy to install.

Yet the coolest part is that I get to give one away! Just enter using the Rafflecopter below. Good luck!

  1. We try to be careful of how we are spending our money. We turn off things we are not using. We re-use things instead of buying new. I would like to win to save money on our heating bill.

  2. I would dominate this challenge! LOL. One of my favorite ways to “save” energy is to use it for multi-purposes. For example, I bake early in the morning or late in the day to heat the home.

  3. I would LOVE to try this challenge. We have a pretty old system that I manually turn up and down… daily!

  4. This looks amazing. We try to conserve energy by buying energy star appliances and sealing openings near doors and windows.

  5. Harmony B says:

Would love to win to help with energy costs.
We try to make sure all leaks and drafts are closed or covered

  6. We have been looking at these!! I’d love a Nest because our energy bills are through the roof. I love how *smart* it is!

  7. I got to try a Nest out and now really want one, it was awesome!

  8. We save energy by shopping for the most energy efficient (and effective) products we can, installing low-flo toilets and the like. I’d love a NEST to help regulate our home temp throughout the day. Our heating bill this month has been horrifying!

  9. We’re always trying to save energy, specially because our 3,200 sqf home gives us too many expenses! Loved hearing about NEST and would love to win! My heating bill this month was huge!

  10. Carol Roberts clark says:

would be so nice to have this would save me so much money ours is old and way out of date we put insulation in the attic this past summer and we make sure all the cracks are sealed its very time consuming

  11. One of our friends just got one, and it looks awesome – it would be perfect for the new house that we are closing on in 3 weeks!

  12. I would love this! My heating bill has been steadily climbing every month and I think my ancient thermostat is partially to blame! I conserve energy by turning it down at night but would love a thermostat I can program!

  13. I’d live the nest because my last heating oil bill was extremely high. We try to conserve energy by keeping the lights out and get Energy Star appliances. The Nest sounds awesome!

  14. We have an old leaky house. We have to save $ by keeping the heat on low… 54 at night! Brr.

  15. I WOULD LOVE A NEST. I HAVE HEARD SUCH GREAT THINGS ABOUT IT! I SEAL OUR WINDOWS AND TRY TO CONTROL THE THERMOSTAT, BUT WOULD LOVE SOMETHING PROGRAMMABLE!

  16. Similar to the other responses this NEST looks incredible. It’s hard to program a thermostat I think. THis looks easy, plus easy to read. I would love this!

  17. we have such issues with drafts. we try to seal the windows with plastic and sometimes newspaper. it’s not the prettiest but it helps!

  18. I would really like the NEST. My eyes are bad and it’s hard to see the numbers on my old thermostat. I try to conserve energy, but the winter is the hardest for my older bones!

  19. I try by unplugging appliances and turning things off when we aren’t using them. I try to turn the heat down at nighttime if I remember! I would love the NEST because of the east to read screen. I read the reviews too and it looks amazing! I’m not one for new fangled technology, but this looks great!

  20. Good luck to all!

  21. Melissa Teears says:

We need it because we have an old dial thermostat. We try to save by putting plastic on the windows and keeping temps lower at night and when not at home.

  22. I need to win this device. It takes the guess work out of programming the thermostat. It’s easy to use0 or atleast it sounds easy! My biggest issues are drafty windows and I try to seal them

  23. THe Nest is the coolest thing ever. I played around on the website and have been hearing nothing but good stuff about it. I sure hope I win! As for how I conserve- I shut lights out when not in the room, I buy energy saving light bulbs, I turn the heat lower when we go out, etc

  24. I sure hope I win this — PLEASE!

  25. We have a drafty 70’s ranch, and it seems like we’re constantly finding nooks and crannies of escaping air. Last summer we added attic insulation and replaced two windows, many more to go!

  26. Currently we have to get up 2 – 3 ahead of time to adjust the thermostat. Winning this Nest would allow us to just set it. We conserve energy by turning the thermostat down at night.

  27. I love this NEST you speak of. I want one. It looks so great and so easy to be energy efficient. I shut lights off and turn the thermostat down when not in use!

  28. Please please please- I want this NEST. It looks so incredible. THe digital screen is the best part. Easy to read for my aging eyes!

  29. We conserve heating energy by using the wood stove when we can. Also we’ve begun swapping our lightbulbs slowly to LED

  30. I WOULD LOVE TO WIN THIS NEST. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO HAS BEEN USING THE NEST OFR OVER A YEAR. SHE CAN CONTROL HER HOME SETTINGS FROM HER MOBILE PHONE. I LOVE TECHNOLOGY AND COULD CERTAINLY BENEFIT FROM THIS!

  31. Crystal R says:

I would love the nest thermostat because we are a tech savy family. My husband says it would be awesome to be able to adjust the temp from wherever we are. What a great way to conserve energy.
We changed all of our lightbulbs to LED, we bought an energy efficient washer/dryer, we also just put new insulation strips around our windows and doors

  32. Please Please Please! I want to win

  33. I hope I won! Please notify me!
