Sunday, September 29th is International Coffee Day. In my house every day is coffee day, simply because I cannot seem to function without it. So when Gevalia invited me to taste-test their new line of café-style beverages in honor of International Coffee Day, who was I to disappoint them?
Then they told me that I can give a box away to a reader and I was definitely in!
Not only does a cup (or two) of coffee help start off the day, there is also some strong evidence which shows that coffee has health benefits too, such as: a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, fewer cardiovascular and heart-related issues, and less likely to have illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia, liver cancer, basal cell skin cancer and possibly several other types of cancer. What a terrific excuse to have another cup!
Gevalia sources our coffee from both small and large farms throughout the globe, which is important since coffee farming is a challenging livelihood for farmers and families, especially those in the poorer regions. The company says that it understands the complexity of the challenges currently facing coffee growers, and is committed to contributing to meaningful solutions, though their website does not go into more detail about any such initiatives.
The Gevalia company has a pretty cool history too. Founded in 1853, Victor Theodor Engwall opened a business importing coffee beans in the town of Gävle, Sweden. His business grew quickly due to the quality of his coffee. Gevalia became the official coffee purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden and it continues to be so today.
So back to taste-testing their new line of café-style beverages. Each flavor comes with a coffee pod to put in your k-cup style coffee maker along with packet of powdered froth, made from real milk, which becomes foam when the coffee is added to it. In two steps, coffee drinkers (like me) can become a barista by simply pouring the froth packet into a mug.
The beverages come in three flavors, Café Latte, Capuccino and Caramel Macchiato. My husband and I started by tasting the Mocha Latte flavor because of the three that is typically the one we would go for first. It is rich and tasty, without too much cocoa or too much coffee flavor. Later on we tried the other two flavors. All three are exactly what they should be, and none of the flavors are too sweet or “fake” tasting. If you are a Cappuccino fan you will be pleased to be able to make at home the same flavor as you get in a restaurant. The Caramel Macchiato was most pleasantly surprising in that it is full of flavor without too much sweetness. It is spot on. The only bad part of this tasting experience is that I did not have any good desserts in the house to have with my coffee!
The Gevalia café-style beverages are sold in six packs for $8.49 and nine packs for $11.99 at retailers nationwide and at Gevalia.com. Guess what? If you visit FoamAtHome.Gevalia.com you can get a free sample of Gevalia Mocha Latte starting on September 29th. Not a bad way to celebrate International Coffee Day!
I am also giving away a box of my personal favorite of the three flavors, the Mocha Latte, to one lucky reader. Simply follow the Rafflecopter form below to enter. You can also find out what others are saying about the new beverages by following the hashtag #FoamAtHome on Twitter and Facebook. Good luck!
