A Safe Snack List for Kids with Peanut, Tree Nut & Egg Allergies

A Safe Snack List for Kids with Peanut, Tree Nut & Egg AllergiesEvery school year parents ask me what snacks are safe for their kids to have in school. The folks at SnackSafely.com have put together a comprehensive snack list that can be extremely helpful as a guideline for finding safe snack foods for children. I am not affiliated with SnackSafely in any way except that I came across this list and thought it might be helpful for other parents or educators.

The list is intended as a guide for schools, organizations, sports leagues, and other events where snacks may be offered to children with allergies to peanuts, tree nuts or eggs. Of course, while this provides an effective tool for keeping the most egregious allergens out of the classroom and is referenced by many schools throughout the country, you should not rely solely on the guide to protect a child with food allergies. Please continue to read food labels as manufacturers may change their ingredients or processes at any time without warning or notice to the consumer.

Additionally, there are many children with severe food allergies to items beyond peanuts, tree nuts, and eggs, so it is important to not refer to the items on this list as “allergen free,” so those with allergies to other items, such as milk or wheat, do not inadvertently assume that these items are safe for all allergies.  It is important to remember that current labeling guidelines do not require manufacturers to disclose traces of potential allergens that may be introduced as part of the manufacturing process.

With that said, however, this list provides an amazingly rich starting point, not only for parents of children with food allergies but also for parents and educators who want to keep children safe and included.
