How You Can Give a Child a Hunger-Free Summer

Have a hunger free summerAs we move into the summer months, most of us are excited by the warmer weather and the break from the routine of the school year. Sadly, not all children are happy to be out of school because for them, the summer means less food on the table.

During the school year, 21.5 million children depend on free or reduced-price school meals to help keep them from going hungry. For many children, the free or reduced-price lunches received at school is their only meal of the day.

And it gets even worse in the summer, when only 2.3 million children are enrolled in summer meal programs. Whether families do not know about local meal programs, have no access to such programs or whether there is a lack of resources in their community, this means there are millions of children at an increased risk of hunger during the summer months. To those kids, summer is not just a time of relaxation and a break from studying. It is a time of discomfort and fear.

You can help.

For nearly 20 years, ConAgra Foods has led the charge against child hunger in America with donations of more than $50 million and 290 million pounds of food and by supporting organizations that bring innovative thinking and solutions to the table.

Half of the ConAgra Foods Foundation’s $10 million commitment to Feeding America is dedicated to summer hunger support. Now in its fourth year, Hunger Free Summer has supported the delivery of more than 2.5 million meals and snacks to children struggling with hunger over the summer.  Their goal is to reach more children in need during the summer than before and to encourage everyone to take action in the fight against child hunger.

Please consider taking one of these steps to help a family put food on the table this summer. Here’s how you can help:

  • Consider making a donation of healthy foods to your local food bank or through Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. They sure could use the help.
  • For every ConAgra item purchased and code entered here by 8/31/13, ConAgra Foods will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to Feeding America.
  • Visit, and take a moment to watch the video.  For each view of the video, ConAgra Foods will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to Feeding America.
  • Share the video with friends and family so they too can help have one meal donated to Feeding America. You can share the link via email, Facebook or Twitter too.

Additionally, if 2 million codes or more are entered, then the 10 food banks nationwide with the most codes entered within their service area (based on zip codes) will each receive $10,000 (the equivalent of 80,000 meals) from ConAgra Foods.

Are you and your family having a hunger-free summer? Shouldn’t everyone?
