As news of gun related deaths and gun crime continues to permeate our society even after the Sandy Hook tragedy, it has become even more obvious that the gun control laws in this country must be enforced immediately. Last week I was one of several bloggers who had the opportunity to learn about Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan campaign of over 850 mayors and over 1.2 million grassroots supporters who are working together to demand that Congress step forward with a plan to end gun violence.
The coalition also has more than 1.2 million grassroots supporters, including Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike. Supporters have a wide range of feelings about guns and gun ownership, yet they all want to work together to pass common-sense legislation that will:
• Require an in-depth background check for every gun sold in America
• Ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines
• Make gun trafficking a federal crime, with real penalties for “straw purchasers”
You can read the details of their well thought-out plan at: demandaction.org.
The coalition was founded in 2006, several years before Newtown, Aurora, Gabby Giffords and before thousands of people lost their lives to gun violence. Given that almost seven years later we still have no plan, it should come as no surprise that this country has 20 times more gun murders than in other high-income countries.
Thanks to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, the coalition has grown from a committed group of 15 members to include mayors from 44 states from major cities and small towns around the country. (To find out if your mayor is demanding a plan to end gun violence, you can check the list at: http://mayorsagainstillegalguns.org/html/members/members.shtml.)
The coalition also has more than 1.2 million grassroots supporters, including Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike. Though Americans may have differing opinions on many political topics we are united in the belief that support for the Second Amendment goes hand in hand with keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and other dangerous people.
We have the passion. We have the ability. We have the voice. Though we cannot bring back the precious lives that have been lost, by working together we can demand a plan for preventing anymore senseless tragedies.
