It’s October again and soon there will be a sea of pink all around us in support of breast cancer awareness. This time last year I wrote a post about pinkwashing due to the frustration of seeing companies who throw up pink but do nothing of significance to help the cause.
If you know me in person or follow this blog, you probably already know that I am a huge football junkie. For the past few years fans have seen pink on the field in October but I was always curious whether the National Football League and the NFL Players Association do more to walk the talk than wear pink gloves, cleats and uniforms.
And, they do. This month the NFL and the Players Association are running their fourth annual national breast cancer screening initiative and fundraising campaign called “A Crucial Catch: Annual Screening Saves Lives”.
The goal of the campaign is to remind women about the importance of getting a mammogram. As a woman who turns 40 in just a few weeks, I definitely get the importance. Though the baseline mammogram I had at 35 was normal and do regular self-checks, it’s time for me to have that next mammogram.
The campaign has raised more than $3 million to date for the American Cancer Society. What is different this year is that money raised through A Crucial Catch will support the American Cancer Society’s Community Health Advocates National Grants for Empowerment (CHANGE) program. The program provides outreach and breast cancer screenings to women who need them.
Beginning on October first, a sea of pink will be scattered across football fields during games, from the coins used for the coin toss to kicking tees and uniform accessories. Afterwards, game-worn pink merchandise and footballs will be autographed post-game and auctioned at NFL Auction (www.nfl.com/auction). All NFL Auction proceeds from the sale of breast cancer awareness items during the month of October will benefit the American Cancer Society. In additional, special pink merchandise will also be available at stadium retail stores, at www.NFLShop.com and outlets such as Neweracap.com, Nike.com, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Hatworld and Lids.
Several of the NFL’s sponsors are also contributing to the cause in a variety of ways. Additionally, various players throughout the league will be hosting events and fundraisers in their cities during the month of October.
